Οι Άγιοι Αγγελής, Μανουήλ, Γεώργιος και Νικόλαος οι Νεομάρτυρες εκ Μελάμπων Κρήτης

 

Όλοι   γεννήθηκαν   στο   χωριό   Μέλαμπες   Ρεθύμνου   Κρήτης,   από γονείς    ευσεβείς   χριστιανούς.

Ο   Ἀγγελής   και   ο   Μανουήλ   ήταν    γνήσια    αδέλφια,   γιοί   του Ιωάννη   Ρετζέπη.   Ο   Γεώργιος   ήταν   γιός   του   Κωνσταντίνου Ρετζέπη.   Ο    Νικόλαος    ήταν   γιός   κάποιου   άλλου,   Ιωάννη    Ρετζέπη.

Όλοι   δηλαδή   ήταν    από   την   ίδια    οικογένεια,                   

Το   1821   όμως,   συντάχθηκαν   με   τους   χριστιανούς   και   πολέμησαν γενναία   για  την   ελευθερία   της   πατρίδας.   Όταν   επέστρεψαν   στη γενέτειρά   τους   και   πήγαν   να   πληρώσουν   τους   καθιερωμένους φόρους   στους εντεταλμένους Τούρκους, τους κατάγγειλαν σαν αποστάτες   του   Μουσουλμανισμού    στον   Μεχμέτ   Πασά   του Ρεθύμνου.

Συλλήφθηκαν   και   οδηγήθηκαν   δεμένοι   στην   πόλη   αυτή.   Επειδή όμως   δεν   υπέκυψαν   στις   κολακείες   των   τυράννων   και   έμειναν σταθεροί   στην   πίστη   τους,   βασανίστηκαν   με   τον   πιο   φρικτό τρόπο.
Τελικά   στις   28   Οκτωβρίου   1824   τους   αποκεφάλισαν   μπροστά   στην  «Μεγάλη   Πόρτα»  του    Ρεθύμνου.   Οι   τρεις   κάρες   απ’  αυτούς τους   Νεομάρτυρες,

Της  Κρήτης γεννήματα και Λάμπης θρέμματα, τους τετραρίθμους Νεομάρτυρας ανευφημήσωμεν, Γεώργιον, Αγγελήν, Μανουήλ και Νικόλαον,  ούτοι   γαρ   δια   πίστιν   του   Κυρίου    σφαγέντες,   το   αίμα αυτών  εθελουσίως   εν   τη   Ρεθύμνη    εξέχεαν,   διο   και   παρρησίαν έχοντες    προς   Χριστόν,   πρεσβεύουσιν   αεί,   υπέρ   των   ψυχών   ημών.

 

Saints Angelis, Manuel, George and Nicholas the New Martyrs from Melamba, Crete

 

They were all born in the village of Melampes, Rethymno, Crete, to devout Christian parents.

Angelis and Manuel were real brothers, sons of Ioannis Retzepis. George was the son of Konstantinos Retzepis. Nikolaos was the son of someone else, Ioannis Retzepis.

In other words, they were all from the same family, rich, distinguished for their bravery, married with children and enjoyed all the privileges of the Muslims, because they were pretending to be Turks.

In 1821, however, they sided with the Christians and fought valiantly for the freedom of the homeland. When they returned to their homeland and went to pay the established taxes to the Turks, they denounced them as apostates of Islam to Mehmet Pasha of Rethymno.

They were arrested and tied up in this city. But because they did not succumb to the flattery of the tyrants and remained steadfast in their faith, they were tortured in the most horrible way.

Finally, on October 28, 1824, they were beheaded in front of the "Great Gate" of Rethymnon. The three carts of these New Martyrs are kept in the Temple of the Four Martyrs in Rethymno.
