Οι Άγιοι Ακίνδυνος, Αφθόνιος, Πηγάσιος, Ελπιδοφόρος (ή Ελπιδηφόρος) και Ανεμπόδιστος

 

Ήταν   αξιωματούχοι  του   Πέρσου   βασιλιά   Σαπώρ   του   Β’.   Επειδή,   όμως, ομολόγησαν   ότι   είναι   χριστιανοί,   συνελήφθησαν   και   μαστιγώθηκαν σκληρά.   Έπειτα,   τους   έριξαν   στις   φλόγες   μιας   μεγάλης   φωτιάς.    Αλλά   οι θερμές   δεήσεις    τους   προς   τον   Θεό   προκάλεσαν   φοβερή   θύελλα   με   βροχή, που   έσβησε   την   φωτιά.   Αυτό   προκάλεσε    φόβο   στους   Πέρσες,  και   τον   ίδιο το    Σαπώρ,   με   αποτέλεσμα   να    αναβάλει,   τον   θάνατο   των   γενναίων χριστιανών.

Αλλά    μετά   μερικές   μέρες,  τους   έφερε   και   πάλι   στο   κριτήριο.   Αφού   είδε   ότι δεν   μπορούσε να αλλάξει  το    χριστιανικό   τους   φρόνημα,   αποκεφάλισε πρώτο   τον    Αφθόνιο.   Έπειτα,   απευθυνόμενος   στον   Ελπιδοφόρο,   του   είπε να   φανεί   λογικός,  σαν   εγγράμματος  που  ήταν  και  μπορούσε  να   διακρίνει το   ψέμα    από   την  αλήθεια.   Ο   Ελπιδοφόρος   του   αποκρίθηκε   ότι   γι’  αυτό ακριβώς  πιστεύει   στον   Χριστό,   διότι   Αυτός   είναι   «η   οδός   και   η   αλήθεια   και η   ζωή».  Δηλαδή   ο   σωστός   δρόμος,   που   οδηγεί   στην   απόλυτη   αλήθεια   και στην   πραγματική   και   πηγαία   ζωή,  που   αξίζει   κανείς   να   πεθάνει   γι’   αυτή.

Η    απάντηση   του   Ελπιδοφόρου   εξαγρίωσε   τον   Σαπώρ    και   αμέσως   τον αποκεφάλισε.   Οι    θυσίες   αυτές   ενθάρρυναν    ακόμα   περισσότερο   τους υπολοίπους,   και   έμειναν    ακλόνητοι   στην   πίστη   τους.   Τότε   ο   Σαπώρ διέταξε    να   τους   ρίξουν    μέσα    σε   αναμμένο   καμίνι.
Έτσι,   μαρτυρικά   και   ένδοξα,  παρέδωσαν   όλοι   την   μακαρία   ψυχή   τους    στο   ζωοδότη    Χριστό.

Ακίνδυνον   μέλψωμεν,  συν  Αφθονίῳ  ομού,  κλεινόν  Ανεμπόδιστον, Ελπιδηφόρον   στερρόν,   Πηγάσιον   ένδοξον·   ούτοι   γαρ   ακινδύνως,   εξ αφθόνου   κρατήρος,   πηγάζουσι   τοις   ελπίδι,   αρραγεί   προσιούσι,   χαρίτων ανεμποδίστων,    κρήνην   θεόβρυτον.

Ως   άστρα    απλανή,   του   Ηλίου   της   δόξης,   ανέλαμψαν   εν   γη,   οι   Χριστού στρατιώται,   τον   ζόφον    διώκοντες,   των   παθών   και   πηγάζοντες,  χάριν άφθονον, ανεμποδίστως τοις πάσι, και ακίνδυνον, την σωτηρίαν δορούνται,    ελπίδι   της   πίστεως.

Μεγαλυνάριον.
Όμιλος   πεντάριθμος   Αθλητών,   διηγωνισμένων,   εν   Κυρίω  μαρτυρικώς, πρόκειται  εις  αίνον·  αυτοίς   ούν   εκβοώμεν·   χαίρετε   Αθλοφόροι,   Χριστού   πανθαύμαστοι.

They were officials of the Persian king Sapor II. But because they confessed that they were Christians, they were arrested and severely whipped. Then they threw them into the flames of a great fire. But their fervent prayers to God caused a terrible storm with rain, which extinguished the fire. This caused fear in the Persians, and Sapor himself, as a result of which he postponed the death of the brave Christians.

But after a few days, he again brought them to the criterion. After seeing that he could not change their Christian opinion, he beheaded Aphthonius first. Then, addressing Elpidophoros, he told him to appear reasonable, as if he were literate and could distinguish the lie from the truth. The Hopeful One replied that this is exactly why he believes in Christ, because He is "the way and the truth and the life". That is, the right path, which leads to the absolute truth and to the real and true life, which is worth dying for.

The answer of Elpidophoros enraged Sapor and he immediately beheaded him. These sacrifices encouraged the rest even more, and they remained steadfast in their faith. Then Sapor ordered them to be thrown into a burning furnace.

Thus, martyrdom and gloriously, they all surrendered their blessed souls to the life-giving Christ.
